We'd like to propose the following issue for the upcoming Data for History meeting:
How to facilitate multi-perspective data exploration?
The Huygens Institute for the History of the Netherlands (Huygens ING) is traditionally known for publishing historical and literary sources, in various modes of selecting and editing. In our linked data infrastructure, we aim to make available these data, gathered in over more than a century of scholarly effort, preferably linked to the ‘raw’ data (if made available as LOD resource by the archival institution), and also to edits and adaptations of these data by researchers. The issue we’d like to bring to the Data for History workshop is: how to do this in a meaningful, easy-to-use and -query way? Or, put another way, how can we allow future users of the data to discern between the various perspectives on the data, and decide which data are suitable for their research goals, and which are not?
To get the discussion started, we’ll present a use case of a project that makes connections between a large number of data observations from archival sources (‘snapshots’ of the lives of persons, from e.g. marriage or baptism registers, company’s pay ledgers, etc.) to reconstruct the lives and careers of individuals, and the (socio-economic, family) networks in which these individuals operated.
